Raising and processing intact boars in organic pig farming
This project has provided valuable practical experience for three organic pig farmers and two major Flemish retailers and their meat processors in raising and marketing uncastrated boars. For the retailers, this aligns with the public demand for alternatives to castration. In addition, ecological sustainability also emerged as an important motivator. Two of the three participating pig farmers would like to continue raising intact boars. They found that it is entirely possible to raise intact boars, while adjusted management measures were necessary at the third farm to limit agitation.
The project showed that the prevalence of boar taint on the three participating farms was relatively high. Selecting non conforming carcasses without boar taint made it possible to achieve a good final product quality for the consumer. Based on the results, non-conforming carcasses can be blended in at a rate of up to 20%. The organic version of a boar taint-reducing feed proved effective for skatole. The use of grass silage also had a reducing effect on androstenone.
