Pest monitoring and alerts in outdoor and tunnel-grown vegetables
The pest monitoring and alert service in organic vegetables supports organic growers in monitoring diseases and pests according to IPM principles. To this end, Inagro, PSKW and Viaverda carry out field observations on organic farms and send a biweekly warning bulletin.
Through this project, we further strengthened and expanded the existing warning service. In 2024 and 2025, we monitored around 20 pests from April to October at 16 locations: 11 open-field vegetable farms, 2 farms with tunnel-grown fruiting vegetables, and the 3 trial sites of the research centres. This provided good regional coverage across Flanders (except Limburg).
In addition to crop-specific pests, we also monitored polyphagous pests and natural enemies, both of which were given a dedicated section in the bulletin. The preparation and distribution of the bulletins now run efficiently using a shared online platform. As the final project action, we expanded the set of pest identification sheets and the pest calendar for vegetables, enabling growers to monitor pests on their farms even more proactively.
