Compost teas and pre-cultivation as biological control strategies for Phytophthora spp. in raspberries
Phytophthora spp. forms a significant challenge in organic cultivation of raspberries leading to significant economic losses. In conventional raspberry cultivation, chemical pesticides are used to minimize the impact of this soil pathogen, but in organic cultivation, only few effective non-chemical pesticides are known and available. Finding quick and easy solutions to control soil-related diseases such as Phytophthora spp. is one of the major questions asked by organic raspberry growers. A possible alternative solution is the use of compostteas or pre-crops which create a healthier and more diverse soil microbiome, which then can compete with the soil pathogens present in the soil and thus help suppress disease symptoms.
