Rese(c)t explores how insects can contribute to a sustainable, circular, and local agricultural system in Flanders. Insects can convert agricultural and agri-food by-products into valuable products such as proteins, fats, and frass (insect manure). The project investigates the use of insects as feed for (organic) broiler chickens to improve animal health and welfare while reducing the need for antibiotics. In addition, the potential of frass to enhance plant resistance against diseases and insect pests is being studied, as well as its use as an alternative to organic poultry manure in organic mushroom cultivation.
