Bigijzer 2.0: Oral iron provision to organic piglets
The main objective of this project (operational group) is to find oral iron alternatives for organic pig farmers, thus eliminating the need for iron injections. To achieve this, the alternatives must be sufficiently effective and efficient. If effective alternative techniques/products are available, they can be implemented throughout the organic pig sector while maintaining resilient and healthy animals.
Initially, research will be conducted to determine which alternative iron supplements are suitable for oral use in piglets. Research institutions will collaborate with pig farmers to exchange practical experiences and ideas. In addition, literature and market research will be conducted to identify suitable products or alternative materials (e.g., alternative rooting material). These alternatives will then be tested for their iron content and applicability in pig feed. A SWOT analysis will also be conducted for each alternative iron source.
In a second phase, we will investigate whether variation in iron status can be linked to piglet vitality. Furthermore, the selected iron alternatives will be field-tested on various organic pig farms. The project results will be shared through newsletters, articles, presentations within organic farmers networks and during a demonstration event.
